New year, new toy and new product

Happy new year everyone!! My Holiday schedule was mind boggling, so I have not made a post....
For Christmas Miss Lindsey got a Kindle Fire. It is an android run computer tablet. Oh so cool. Games, youTube and FaceBook at the touch ofq the screen!!! Laurent and I were so jealous, we saved our monies and bought one to share! LOL This post is brought to you by Kindle! (In fact I have no clue how to add pictures yet so I will have to edit later from my Pc)
Since wehave these fabulous machines I HAD to make a cute way to cover them for on the go and when not in use. After 3 designs I came up with one I like and I think you will too. If you need one, just comment on this post below. Cost is $18 plus shipping.

A BIG thank you to all of you who read my blog about Kathryn and her situation!! Here is her FaceBook post this evening:

"Hi Everyone! It's Kathryn, I'm finally at the store where there is internet and I can thank each and every one of you for your generosity and kind hearts!! I can't even begin to express all the love in my heart for you guys, or to express how thankful I am. Even though we didn't raise the entire amount the management company agreed to take what we had and they will work with me for the rest!! Again, I just don't have words to express all that is in my heart right now. Thanks so much for the continued support and prayers, keep spreading the word about where we are. Lisa and I intend to start the cloth diaper meetings back up in January and there may even be a knitting class on the agenda!!!"

A great way to end a day.

Now, I just need to round up a few toys for her boys for Christmas and then I can take my Elf hat off. Anyone wanna send some things??

Meet Kathryn Baker, owner of the Children's Carousel, wife to a disabled and blind gentleman and Mom to 6 grandkids.

I met Kathryn when she took over my rental spot I had for the Pink Zebra. She utilized the (my) painted walls and opened a resale shop with a Boutique corner. This business was/is desperately needed in our area with this economy. Quickly, she outgrew the tiny space and moved to a bigger spot and then expanded even more. Rent in Old Katy is big bux, so she (very smartly) moved the booming business to a location off I-10 and Apple White. In the meantime, Kathryn and her husband adopted 3 of 6 grandkids, due to some burdens out of control. She did not want them going into the foster system.

This where things start going awry. On a normal Saturday in June, Kathryn's husband goes to take a snooze and has a stroke. He wakes up and can't see. Panicing, Kathryn rushes him to the hospital only to find out he has suffered 2 strokes AND a heart attack. His cartoroid arteries are blocked (1 @90%, 1 @ 100%) and he needs a bypass. After a few surgeries, Bill still has no sight and shortly after, his insurance has run out.

*NEXT*

The house. Making payments on a house when there is no income is impossible.

Bill is retired AND disabled. Kathryn opened her resale shop out of love and dreams, never once thinking her family of 5 would rely on this tiny income to support her family.

The house will be sold out from under her in January. Kathryn and her family will be homeless.

The Carousel will close THIS Wednesday, December 14, 2011, if she cannot raise the rent plus a little back rent from when Bill was in the hospital. She is doing all she can right now... big sale, taking any and all donations, PayPal or in person. Best yet, visit the shop and make some purchases. That benefits everyone!!

If I could personally bail her out, I would. But I will be lucky myself to have a gift for my own kids under the tree this year. Everything is so tight this year.

Goings' On Around Here....

Hey there!! I hope all has been well for you since my last post!!

I totally missed postings for Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Halloween was a blurr for me... After finishing up some overalls and then having "One of THOSE Days" with a screw in my tire and many errands to run, I was able to bust out 4 costumes, hair & make-up for the four of us in less than 3 hours. I think that is a record for me!! (Cailey, Lauren, Lindsey and Myself)

*No picture of me.... hee hee. I was a Cave woman as well, only dorky. :0)The Babin's All Staff Meeting was the Saturday before and our teams chose themes to dress as. My Team (Chrisies team) dressed as Pirates. We won the challege, of course, and my costume came in second place to Emeril Lagasse (SP) with a cool $50 prize!!

Thanksgiving was spent at Gramma and Grampas house, in usual fashion! No pictures, sorries. I must have had too much wine!With those holidays out of the way, it is time to get ready for Christmas and start working extra shifts at Babin's. (Babin's sure seems to be the center of my world, eh? Well, in March I will have worked there for 10 years. Everyone, there, including MANY of my guests, are like family to me. So, yep, Babin's plays a significant role in my world!)This year I had to create another Sleigh to be pulled by our giant fish in the middle of the dining room at B's. I start with random large boxes, tape and hot glue. Here is my creation!

I delivered my most favorite pair of overalls to date!! The whole family loved the work, especially Mom and Jordyn. :0)

One little "Trevorness" though. I took at least 20 pictures of J in her new o'alls and Lins snapped a couple of J & I. Went to review the pics and DOH!!! Left the memory card in my pc. I have to reschedule a little photo shoot with Jordyn.

Each pair I try to make different than the others in the group. Fabric choices, personalization. Anything can be done. These overalls are a statement of the child and are personal. They are made to LAST for all 4 years of High School and beyond. You will NOT have to invest in another pair, as I do not use any paint that will be sticky or crack. I STITCH around all raw edges of fabric so they will not peel or fray. You definitely get your money's worth here.

Lots to do still and lots to share today!

First, today is the last day to order Homecoming Overalls for Mayde Creek High School. Your Homecoming is just 2 weeks away!! Time to get your hustle on!! LOL

Second, the Girls and I went to a Morton Ranch football game a couple weeks ago. We had a blast! It was an all day event for us... I set aside my sewing tasks for the day and we created our own MRHS tees. We did not get any good pics of the game, but we got a couple of shots of the tees before we left.

The game itself was fun and the girls learned some things about the sport. But the halftime show was amazing!! Both bands made a great showing of their field shows and we were impressed!! I know my HS field show was never as intricate nor as well displayed. We were more of a street/parade band, and we scored VERY well in band reviews. These shows we saw were very precise and I can see many of these kids moving up to the likes of any Drum and Bugle Corps. It was very refreshing, to say the least.

Third. I made some Katy Tiger Denim Jackets a few weeks ago and neglected to share them with you... So, here they are, LOL

Lastly, but much more recent, I put the finishing touches on some Cinco Ranch Homecoming Overalls yesterday, and I snapped a few pics to share with you before making my deliveries. I sure hope Cinco wins their game tonight!!! Go Cougs!!

Hope y'all have a fabulous weekend... I have so much I have neglected around here I need to catch up on... The mountain of laundry and the grass that has not been mowed in over a month!! (I just giggle every time Rosie goes out to do her business and cannot find a place cuz the grass tickles her heiney.. o.O)

So, sometimes I break the rules a little. Yep.

I got a call last week, from a student, asking if I could make her Homecoming overalls. She was certain on what she wanted on them and had done all the research. It was past the "cut off" date for that school.... But....but... I said yes.

So I spent the entire day today creating this favorite pair of overalls.

Meet Kaitlyn. She is a Sophomore at Taylor High. She has fabulous manners and interacts with adults (well, me, if that counts). She communicates very well and says what she means. It is tough to find a teen with her stature! Kaitlyn is in FFA this year and will be raising a goat. My favorite part of her overalls, is Gilbert, the goat. (I named him that, not her!)

First Timers Guide to Planning a Successful Homecoming Friday

After blogging for the past few years about Homecoming Overalls and showing my work, I have decided to share with you some tips to make your Homecoming Friday event successful.

On my blog, I have a widget called "Feedjit". It is a tracking tool. I can see when someone comes to visit my blog (not WHO they are), what search engine and phrase they typed into the browser, what post title they went to see and then what (if any) link they exited to. It sounds kinda nosey, but it really is not. Its is just a tool I use to help me help you find the information you are looking for on the internet. And, I have found, there really is not much information regarding Texas Homecomings as there should be!!

Hence: the reason I am writing this now!!

So, what do you need??? What is your budget?? What is your childs final goal goal??

NEEDS:

I'll start with the overalls, since that is my particular speciality.

You will need to start shopping for overalls in early August. Earlier if you KNOW what size you will need and the earlier you shop, the more choices you will have. Also, for those who are on a tighter buget, if you get the overalls purchased, having someone decorate them later will not seem like a huge expence.

Personally, I think the best deal around is on eBay. The overalls you can find are generally new or very close to new. Women buy them to wear once or twice and then forget about them in the back of the closet. It's not like overalls are the most attractive articles of clothing, LOL Just search "womens overalls" and add the size, S, M or L. I have gotten Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein for $10 plus shipping. Not bad considering at retail the men's overalls go for $50-70. Ouch.

Next I would try resale. Around Katy, we have two Katy Christian Ministries, Platos Closet and the (newer) Salvation Army (where JoAnnes Fabrics used to be).

If you are shopping retail, Bass Pro Shops @ Katy Mills carries 2 brands. Academy on I-10 sometimes has smaller sizes, but the Academy on Westheimer @ Voss has 2 or 3 brands and they carry many sizes. Tractor Supply right in front of the Merril Center also carries o'alls, but Katy High students are swift to pick up all the smaller sizes there.

On line there are a few retailers that carry women's overalls. However, they are costly and the shipping is heavy too. As August 2012 rolls around, I will update this and post some places I have found good deals at.

Decorating.

Plan at LEAST 3 weeks to decorate these new overalls. Especially if you plan to have someone else do it for you. Artists need plenty of time to do their best work. And this time of year, decorators become swamped or stop taking orders for certain schools so they can deliver on time.

Of course I want everyone to look their best, and have my overalls on. But I am real and know that not everyone can afford Custom Appliqued garb, nor would I be able to sew that many in such little time. So, to decorate, you have choices:

Custom Applique

Paint

Do-it-yourself-fabric lettering

When I applique, it is a process. Each pair I do is different (but the same, KWIM?) individualized for that person. I have fabric swatches, samples of different elements I can add to your overalls. Every year I add more and more. Each pair, start to finish, takes about 25 hours. Pockets have to be ripped off, patterns need to be made, tracing, cutting, ironing.... and thats all before the sewing!! I take the inseam out so I can sew all the goodies onto the legs and then I sew them shut. Just when you think they are done, the bling comes out!! WOOT!! The finishing touch!!

Fabric paint is fun, if you are artsy. It can be expensive to do, because denim is dark and thirsty. My tip: Everything you plan to paint, paint it in white (like nail polish, several thin coats works better than a heavy coat. Paint peels and chips). Once the white is dry, then paint your color. The color will be more true. Then outline as much as possible to make your things defined and pop. Finish with Bling.

Fabric letters. First you need to find some fun fabrics. JoAnnes Fabrics (Next to Ross, I-10 & Fry) has a great new selection!! They have some little folded fabrics, called Fat Quarters, arranged by color at hip level across the calico wall. They are perfect for the overalls because you don't have to buy a large quantity and you don't have to stand in line to have the fabric cut. Next you need "Heat-N-Bond HEAVY" . In the RED package. It is made for NO SEW projects. Just iron it to the back of the fabric, draw your whatevers (letters? Numbers?) and cut them out. Unpeel the paper backing and iron to your o'alls. Technically, you are done.... But I would not be. You will need some fabric paint to outline and add details. And, don't forget the bling!!!

I do not make mums.... I wish I did!! I probably will when my girlies get to High School. :0)

Where to buy/order them?

Try your school first. The Band Booster Clubs usually have order forms in the Cafeteria for students to pick up at lunch. If the school has the order form as a file they can send me, I will upload it onto my blog so you can print one out and take back to school with money.

If you don't want to get one from school, try Kroger or Randalls. They almost ALWAYS have some premade that can be added to or customized there or at your house. Also try local Florists. I will try to get some places and phone numbers next year (early) and post them for you.

For you crafty ones, not unlike myself, go to Hobby Lobby, Michaels, JoAnnes.... any crafty place and start garthering your ribbons and hanging things. Hobby Lobby keeps a great selection of backs, ribbons, bells and all sorts of what-nots to keep you busy for weeks making a mum. An even craftier TIP: Shop AFTER your Homecoming and get great deals on the things left over when they go on sale. Keep a box handy and start a collection of things throughout this school year to make one for next year!!

I hope this helps someone... Homecoming preparation can make people panic! I would consider it a whole school Prom of sorts, but with a bunch of other stuff thrown in, topped with a football game!

Denim Jackets

As you know, if you follow my blog, I am an applique artist. I design and make wearable applique art for you. I specialize in custom made Homecoming overalls for high school girls to wear to school on Homecoming Friday to support the gianormous mums they wear here in Texas. But that is only for a couple months a year. So, I thought of another way for Moms and girls to show their school spirit at games and around town.

My favorite element of this jacket is the Cross Country emblem. I had fun adding the grass and trees that all you runners know about when you run. LOL Denim jackets are not limited to local high schools.... Feel free to let me design one for your favorite NFL team, College or MLB team!! These jackets are a perfect alternative to the super heavy and hard to earn Letterman's jacket. Lemme tell you, a Varsity jacket here in Texas hangs in the closet for 10 months of the year, getting eaten by moths. To me, that is a total waste of money. A denim jacket never goes out of style and it is light enough to layer, keep in the car for chilly restaurants or that downpour you did not expect. Not to mention the ball games!! Morton Ranch Homecoming Overalls 2011

Here is a sample pair of Homecoming overalls I made for Morton Ranch High School. Featured on them is the Maverick on the bib (deep purple velvet set on snow white velvet), "Mavericks" set on black and white giraffe print down the right leg. The right leg features a trio of black, purple and silver sparkles to make two guard flags crossed and wrapped around the leg. "Guard" is placed on top. Lots of jewels are placed to accent each element and attract the lights at the football stadium.

I won't lie. I am addicted to playing Island Paradise, a Facebook game. I have been playing this game for a little over a year and have almost reached level 100.I really enjoy the creativeness the island gives me. I have really enjoyed the friends I have made who play the game as well. But here is my real confession.... I am giving up most aspects of the game for a while. It is time consuming, so I will be planting long term crops, so I only have to stop in every few days. I am slowly weaning myself away... Bye-bye little island in Paradise!! I promise to stop in on occasion to pat my cows on the head, park myself at the tiki bar for a Lingonberry Cosmo, order up some Bean Salsa Burritos and then kick back on my lawn chair on Shark Bite Beach.It is true, that when you close one door (or leave it cracked open a bit...) another will open, and that opening will be the sewing door. I NEED to get back into my swing instead of being parked here on my pc.

Homecoming Overalls 2011

I noticed quite a few stops here to view my past postings of Homecoming overalls for the Katy area schools. Sorry about the pictures not being available... I had to pull them to protect my product.

If you are interested in purchasing some for the 2011 Homecoming season, leave me a message at the bottom of this post.

Here is how it works: You supply the overalls (to ensure fit, as teens can be picky)

We will meet and go over the details

Cost is $165 for the bib, and 2 other places (usually the right leg and buttocks area)

Deposit of 50% when the overalls change hands.

It takes 2 to 3 weeks to complete the overalls this time of year, what with my job and my own family. I want to ensure I have enough time to make sure your overalls are absolutely perfect!!!!

All of my work is sewn. All appliques are hand drawn and cut from fabric then ironed on to the denim. My Custom Tom's Shoes

Hi!!! My painted (with Sharpie) Tom's have a little story.

My 9 year old daughter really wanted some Tom's for her 10th birthday, so my 18 yr old son got her a pair from his workplace, Sun & Ski Sports. He guesstimated the size and bought my size instead. LOL So instead of taking them back for a trade, I talked him into letting me keep them and he bought her another pair.

On Lindsey's birthday, we went shopping in the mall he works at and at lunchtime, we stopped in to see him. From out behind the counter he pulls out the COOLEST pair of Tom's (or any shoe, for that matter) One with a sun, the other painted with the moon. I had no idea....!!!

Turns out, the very day of her birthday, S & S had some starving artists there to paint Tom's (for a cost). Of course, since I am an artist, I had to go and investigate.... What mediums are they using? What designs are there? What is the inspiration? etc. I watched and learned and then asked the artist of Lindsey's shoes to sign his work on her shoes. He was pleased, as he had NEVER been asked before!!

When we got home, I immediatly had to Google "Hand Painted Tom's" and only found a handful of images.

That very night I started planning MY pair of custom Tom's.

I searched the house for every Sharpie marker I could find... my art stash, the kids rooms, my kitchen drawers. Then went to the craft store and bought a few more.

My pair Tom's took about 20 hours total to draw. I hope you like them. They are very "Me". Pictures, words, doodles.

I hope to create many, many more custom Tom's for as many people who will have me design them.

Here's a Story for you....

When my Mom was 18, and about to graduate from High School, she got strep throat. Her MOM decided that she WOULD NOT go to her Graduation and accept her diploma. She (Granny) told my Mom that the only way she would leave the house on that particular day, was if she (my Mom) lived elsewhere. Well, my Mom has cajones. She got with a friend and MOVED OUT!!! Well, the friend she moved in with was her "steady" at the time, Robert Ford Carrigan.
My Mom graduated with her class and received her diploma and was ready to begin College. Low and behold she got *pregnant*. (Imagine that, living with a man and all that... LOL)
Her Mom got so angry, she would not speak to her. Only my Mom's Dad would come to see her and give some support. Bless his soul!! My Pompa.
So, my Mom became Mrs. Robert Carrigan. Things were tight. It was really hard to pay rent and buy food. So, when the baby was born, ME!!!, the Carrigan's had to rely on friends, a bit of Charity and some food stamps. Still, The Grandma would not budge... even to see her only GRAND DAUGHTER!!! Rrrrr. She bullied and pried and wedged to get the new Momma to divorce the Baby Daddy. Telling her she would only accept the new baby girl IF the Baby Momma divorced the Baby Daddy.
Finally, life was so tough with the new baby girl, that the Momma called her Daddy and said she would file for divorce. She saw that neither of them had a decent education to get a good job with benefits anytime soon, and *maybe* it would be better if they went separate ways. They were good friends to begin with. And really only got married because they wanted to the right thing for their new baby. The Momma made a tough decision and through the tears, she filed that divorce.
Here is the part that is hard to digest. Just how manipulative the GRANDMA was... The Grandma made all her demands through the lawyer... WITHOUT the new Mommas knowledge (after all, the Momma was only 20, and very naive and trusting). Her demands included a restraining order against the new Daddy. She made up some lies that the Daddy was bad ju-ju and so it was a court order that he not come near his daughter. That ruling comes into play for an incident when the baby girl was about 2.
One day when the baby girl was about 2, the neighbor was babysitting while the Momma was at work. They were at the park. Off to one side of the park was the baby Daddy.... Just watching his baby girl swing on the swings, slide on the slide and dig in the sand. Not coming close, not harming a fly. Just watching with the fascination of his very own child enjoying what life had given her.
The neighbor saw him. She knew he was the Daddy. He was watching his baby girl.
At the same time, the Grandma and Grandpa made a surprise visit (which now were regular, as were the gifts) and saw the man watching his daughter. They called the police and he was detained and then given a ticket for "vagrancy" because he was *loitering* in the park of children with less than a dollar on him. Cruel.
The Daddy never got to see his baby girl again.

PART 2: The baby Girl Grows Up
(I am going to continue the story in the possessive now, because the story now is about me.)
The divorce happened when I was 9 months old. I don't remember it, or my Dad. My earliest memories are of the tiny apartment my Mom and I shared. Our neighbors, the Bergerson's, were my family, along with Roger Webb and Penny. A few others dot my memory, including "Mommy-Stel". The Bergerson's (Dennis & Vicki) had 2 sons: Eric and Bruce. As far as I am concerned, they ARE my brothers. I did everything they did, wore their hand-me-downs..... I was a boy!! LOL I have so many happy memories!! Dumpster diving (literally) from the tree above the dumpster, Easter egg hunts at the park, pumpkin ball, sunburns from the beach. I cannot forget Bruces fire behind our apartment complex, stacking snails 10 high, or being *taught* how to hitch-hike!! Back in the old days...
So, when I was 6, Bruce started this little grass fire in a fenced in part of our yard. He was trying to melt plastic army men or something. The fire kinda got out of control and we were stamping it out to no avail!! I had to run and get an adult to help us!! There was a guy at the complex right next to ours.... He grabbed a hose and drug it over and got the fire out BEFORE the fire truck even got there. Our Hero!!
The Hero noticed that my Mom was single and asked her out.... Heh-heh. They started dating. Yup. You guessed it. Just after my seventh Birthday, Doug Knapp married Connie Carrigan; my Mom. (At the time, we lived in Torrance, CA, where I was born.) Being only 7, I did not really understand any of this family stuff, like Daddy's and such. Dennis was my Daddy figure, because he was Bruce & Eric's Dad. I was treated like one of their own. So having Doug as my Dad was not a bad thing. Hey, I kinda had 2 Dad's now? Right? LOL
We ended up moving to a new apartment where I got my own room, instead of sharing with my Mom. Then my new Dad was transferred to Northern California with his job. So we moved to Walnut Creek. I grew up there. All my childhood friends (other than B & E) are from there. Many I have known and still know went to the same Elementary school as I did.
I think I was about 10 or 11 when I started asking questions about my birth father. When I realized that I had one that was different from all the other men I had grown up with. My Mom had been trying to have another baby with Doug. After several miscarriages, she was able to carry my brother, Michael, to within 5 weeks of his due date. His birth was rough and his infancy even rougher. We almost lost him, but he was fighter and strong willed, just like his Dad. My bond with him is almost a Motherly one, as I was almost 12 when was born. I took care of him lots, and babysat him even more. I was like a second Mom in a lot of ways.
It was in High School that I remember quizzing my Mom about my birth father... Whats his name, how did you meet, what color are his eyes, do you think he is still alive, when was the last time you saw him, do you have any pictures... I learned that he had wavy/curly hair, was about 5'9", very artistic (my Mom would always tell me that I got my artistic talents from him) had blue eyes, and was tall and thin. I asked if she knew where he was or how I could find him. But this was all before the internet and I was not adopted, so there were no binding records of any sort.
At 18, Mom told me some more about my Dad and showed me some pictures. She gave me one he had drawn... A self portrait with an afghan dog at his side. She also gave me a florist card, typed, from some flowers he had sent to me. She saved the hospital bands from around my ankles with his name on them. She told me about my Dad having sent me some cards and whatnots for my Birthday. She waited until I was old enough to understand, and then I could make the decision as whether or not I wanted to try and find him. The ball was in my court.
I spent several years growing up, working, going to school and trying to discover who I was. All along knowing and feeling my Dad was out there somewhere to be found.

Part 3: My Adult Life
When I was 24, I met my husband. Scott Thorson. Him being in my life has a parallel to mine. Scott was adopted at birth. His Birth Mom & Dad were VERY young when he was born. Again, as was true in my *before* life, a very manipulative Grandma was involved. This time, the pregnant girl was wisked away from her hometown as soon as the pregnancy was discovered, and lived a hermit life until the baby boy was born. Mom was not allowed to see her son and the Dad was in the Military by this time. Scott was adopted by Katherine and Alec Thorson. They had wanted 2 boys of their own, but after trying, they realized they could not have children of their own. Katherine & Alec adopted 2 boys; Craig and Scott.
Both Scott & mine's Moms' were bullied into doing it someone elses way, to suit them, and not the owners.
Well, when Scott was almost 24, his birth Mother utilized a tracing company, and was able to locate Scott by phone. You should have seen Scott's face when he got the call. It was the most amazing thing to watch. He now had a connection with who he was and where he came from.... biologically. ((Let me amend this a tiny bit. Scott loves his parents who raised him so much. When his Mom (Katherine) passed when Scott was 18, he almost ended his own life. He still speaks of so many happy memories of his Mom that he weeps from her loss.))
Scott and I moved to Snohomish, Washington for about 9 months so we could be close to her. Our next stop: Katy, Texas. Shane, my son, was not yet 2. My Mom had moved here, Texas, right after Shane was born and we needed to be closer, for family. My family was just that. My Mom, my Dad (step, but I don't think of him as step, just for clarification), and my Brother. In 1999, I had Lauren. It was about that time that I started wanting to see if I could find my birth father. I was curious... I wanted to know more about him. I had children of my own now and I wanted to share them. My beautiful babies!! I also wanted to know more about my own background, my heritage, my lineage, as it were. Disease, addictions, balding.. EVERYTHING!!
Then I had Lindsey... Only 20 months after Miss Lauren. We had our first dinosaur computer then, in 2001. When AOL was pretty much the only internet server and it was like $15 a month. LOL I was on line (dial up!!) all the time!! I was learning more and more how sew and listing on eBay. I searched and searched for Robert Ford Carrigan. At that time, my friend, Lisa, had a friend who paid for a service to unlock peoples addresses and phone numbers and I got a hit!! In Mississippi!! I quickly wrote a letter, inserted pictures of our family and sealed the envelope. I had butterflies. Stamps on the envelope. It took a week to get it the post office. I had doubts... All of a sudden I thinking, "If wants to know ME, he would have contacted me by now."
I mailed the letter.
It was in December, before Christmas, in 2001. Lin was four months old.
I sealed it with a kiss.
Nothing came back in January.
Nothing in February.
March.
April.
Maybe he was not ready. Maybe his wife intercepted the letter and he did not know. Maybe he did not live there anymore. Maybe he was dead......
I sorta gave up after that. The hunting I mean.
The thoughts continued.
Since I was on the computer all the time, I signed up on Reunion dot com, I was a well known children's clothing designer on eBay and I opened my website, KraftyMommas Boutique dot com. Life was easy breezy. Raising 3 kids, doing housework, making some money, sewing and being a wife. I opened The Pink Zebra Boutique in Old Katy and was selling Handmade clothing in a storefront.
It was March of 2007 when I got a phone call towards the end of my shift at Babin's. My husband asked me if I was sitting down. He had something to tell me. I was prepared to hear that one of my kids had a broken bone or was sick.
Instead he told me about an email. An inquiry from my website. The sender was asking if I was Trevor Carrigan, born on April 21, 1966, in Torrance, CA.
The sender was Chrissy Carrigan. My Birth Father's wife.
I sat down. Tears pouring down my face.
She included a phone number and I called her. We talked several times, for several hours.
For my Dad's birthday, the following month, she wanted to give him the best present she could: ME!! So we worked it out.
As it turned out, Ford had talked about me to his wife since the first day they met. I had always been a part of him, in his heart, and he shared me with Chrissy, Keeley and Keslie. They all knew about who I was (the baby me) and they said a prayer for me every year on my Birthday. The day before my Dad's Birthday. I was truly his present in 1966.
On his birthday, 2007, I called her cell phone.
She handed him a box.
He started to open the box and handed the phone to him.
"Hi Dad."
Inside the box were pictures I emailed to her and she printed out for him.

Part 4: Family
After all the tears and all the talk, my Dad drove out from Charlotte, North Carolina. He stayed for almost 2 weeks: one week visiting, and one in the hospital. You see, all this happiness brought on a mild heart attack. ((As soon as he got home, he had an open heart bypass and is all fixed up now, good as new!!)) Gee, now don't I bring out the best in people??
Well, since he had been hospitalized, he could not drive home. So Chrissy & Keeley, my younger half brother, flew out to be with him.
I have to say, I have never felt more comfortable with people I do not know, than I did with these 3 family members!! I had never met them before, but the minute I did, I knew we belonged!!!
At home in NC, my even younger sister had to attend High School, so she could not come out here. Her name is Keslie.
After meeting my Dad for the first time in person, then my "step" mom (more like a sister!!), and my brother, I was clued in to the rest my extended family. My Dad has many brothers and sisters!! That means Aunts and Uncles. My Aunt Patio. The best Aunt/Sister/Friend/Confidant ever!! The cherry on top?? Gramma. "Momma". She is 85 and a Spring Chicken!! I could not love a woman more than I love her. But everyone lives in Michigan, Florida... all so far away.
Luckily, this is only the beginning.
This past October 31, 2009, my brother Keely got married to his love, Meghan. I was gonna fly. Then I was gonna take a bus. Right? Nope. At the last second, I decided to drive. And take my girls. We drove 18 hours straight through..... from Houston, TX to Charlotte, NC. It was awesome. I have never done anything so crazy in my life, and it was so worth it. From the girls being bewitched at passing through states they have only heard of to seeing my brother get married and getting to meet my dear Gramma.
It was the trip of a lifetime. So MANY happy memories.

Talking to my Dad the day after Thanksgiving. He says, nonchalantly, "We have a new addition to the family." I am thinking, who's pregnant, not me! Not Patio!! He won't tell. Finally, he gives.
He had a daughter in 1970, in Rochester, NY. Her name is Shannon. Oh, and she contacted me. She is on my Facebook.
"Hey Rocky, wanna watch me pull another rabbit outta my hat?" (In my best Bullwinkle voice)
About an hour later, I get FB message from her, we exchange phone numbers and half an hour later we are burning up the phone lines.
It is awesome to get a sister you always wanted. A little bit late in life... But, hey!! I could not have CHOSEN the 2 sisters I have received any better!!! Serious.

My sister, Shannon, had a baby when she was 19 or 20. A baby boy. She was young and knew she could not offer a good life for this boy, so she gave him for adoption. He is 20 now, old enough to know if he wants to. Guess what?? She found HIM on Facebook!!
What made me finally, after almost 44 years of life, why am I finally writing all this down for everyone to see?
Shannon is going to meet her 20 year old son for the first time in San Diego. She has a layover at IAH for 2 hours and I am going to meet her.
It is all about FAMILY.
And now, I have a large one. My dream come true.
Well, that and I think things have slowed down a bit and I had a chance to get everyone caught up with my life seems as unreal to me as does a Soap. Trying to figure out who's gonna come out of the woodwork next.

The Katy Tigers are looking pretty good again this year!! Going to State? I hope so!!!
I made this little set for Jessa. Gona be a little chilly this weekend and I wanted her to be warm. It is a Tommy Hilfiger unisex size 5. It should fit a 4/5, maybe with the sleeves rolled up, then to a 6/7. Lindsey, my model is a skinny 7/8, and it fits her well.

We have been hit by the H1N1 virus.
Lauren went down last week and I think I had it a couple weeks ago. I'm not sure, but I was sure sick ((and in denial!!)) Lauren, as of today, has been fever free for 36 hours now. Just waiting for the rest of the family to start dropping like flies..
On to sewing... creating... designing...

I realized I had not been keeping up with or listing anything on my website (or here, either!!) My bad! I have not been sewing for ME, only the occasional gift or request. So, officially, KraftyMommas Boutique is back in business after a ONE year hiatus. I had to find a way to retrieve my password to get into the admin part of my website. Tricky and it took me most of a day. I am a dork, yes.
Wanna know the WHY I decided to start sewing for kids again? All that CPSIA crap from months ago? Well, it seems that FINALLY textiles have become exempt!! Yes!! Yes!! After months of fighting, closing my shop, being depressed... EXEMPTED!!! WOOT!!
Bad thing: Matel, the stupid company that broke all the rules regarding lead in the first place, and knowingly brought toys to us from overseas laden with lead, well, they got a special exemption too!! BOYCOT MATEL PRODUCTS!! JMHO.
Anyhoo.. back to me... heh-heh
I am sewing and photographing and selling again!! Yea me!!

Just take a look at this cute Giraffe Set modeled by my friends DD, Carlee. Carlee was doll... She has never ever modeled before and did a great job. The set is a 24 months to 4T. For reference, Carlee wears a 3t/4t.
I also took Penelope the Pirate to a different level. Showing her on a denim shirt with muted Fall colors. Would be nice on a brisk day over a tee or Turtle neck. Shown with a matching Back 2 Basics patchwork twirl skirt. Both are size 6-7-8. Shirt is a Medium. For reference, Lindsey wears a 7 slim.

Tomorrow is one of Babin's biannual All Staff Meetings. The theme is Luau or Hawiian... Beach. Ummmm, my personal favorite. Right? I am on Bruce's team, again. I can't remember having any other team captain, it's been that many times Bruce has chosen me. :0)
Our team color is red. We are wearing red shirts... The team poster I made this time is actually an upcylcled apron from B's that I did a little applique and paint on.
I will *try* to remember to take my camera with me this time so I can share the fun and learning experience we have!

Port O'Connor Mini Vacation

I have been in such a need to just get away, if even for just 2 days, and I finally did!!
YIPPEE!!
A friend of hubs has this *beach* house (not actually ON the beach, but 3 mins away) in Port O'Connor, Texas. He offered it to our family for any weekend we wanted. We planned it and got out of our Katy house without a hitch.... Almost.
So, we took two vehicles for comfort and so we could bring Rosie-Pants. :0)
I drove the Girlz car; Lauren, Lindsey, Rosie and I. Scott and Shane took the Dodge PU. Following the Boyz, about two hours into the drive, I realized I left the big black bag at home on my bed. It contained ALL of "Us Girlz" clothing, undies, swim suits....
AAARRRGGGGHHH!
I remembered all the food, batteries, dog food, trash bags.... You name it, I got it. But not MY stuff. LOL We only had the clothing on our backs. Flip flops.
First night there, Shane and I got out and about to find the pier, the beach... a STORE. We found it all. But trying to find the house was a joke. I got to a stop sign and was signaling to make a left, changed my mind, and flipped the signal to right. As I turned the wheel, the blinker must have clicked off, cuz a minute later, behind me in the darkness was police lights.
?????? What the....????
*wiped the sweat off my brow*
I played my tourist hand, 'cuz thats the truth and all I got. I drove away with a warning. And white knuckles. And I made sure to exaggerate my signals at every turn.
Saturday morning the girls and I rose early and set out around town to question the local gals about finding swim suits for ourselves. (The house is equipped with a washer and dryer.... I can deal with that!) We were pointed into the direction of Sisters Gift Shop. When we found it, I was worried. It looked too tiny to offer anything that would fit, much less afford.
Ahhhhhh. One should NEVER judge a book by its cover!!

At 9:21 AM, Kathy Hoskins was outside, between the 2 buildings that makes the shop so unique. Realizing I was yet one more lost tourist, she offered help. Directions to the nearest Walmart, 60 miles away. She saw the terror on my face and invited us in to look around. 39 mins before opening time.
Kathy showed me three suits, but only one was my size. Pink. Ruffles. Bikini. Little. Never.
I tried it on. It fit PERFECT!! And, I think I looked FAB-U-LOUS!! LMAO
Lins got a cute little bikini, and Lauren decided on a pair of boys surf shorts with a tank. Ca-Ute!!
The best thing?? Kathy and her sister, Teresa Gonzales, own this incredible little Boutique and have created a place where EVERY girl NEEDS to shop. They get in new stuff every week and the prices are better than reasonable. I was afraid my cute little pink bikini was going to cost a fortune, but when I saw it was only $18, I was ready to buy the white one too!! (I'll be getting that suit when we go back!) Gonna sock away a few nights pay at Babin's for the next trip so I can go s.h.o.p.p.i.n.g!

The beach was fun. Not crowded. Dogs. Moms. Kids. Locals. I had a nice conversation with a woman from Sugarland. Sure makes me wish we could afford 2 homes. I could live in POC June through August. Easily. Honest. I really could. The people I met were more than nice. Like meeting a family I never knew I had.
I can't wait to go back.
So.... That's pretty much it. We BBQed some burgers and Shan''s 6 pack of Mangrove Snapper. Ate in style with lots of flavor.

Rose brought all the boy dogs in the neighborhood over to our yard, with her girly scent. THAT was interesting.
The drive home was interesting to say the least. Our previous drive to get there, was over 3 hours. Home? 2 hours, 25 mins. 75 all the way. I still have a cramp in my calf. LOL I put more highway miles in this weekend than I have in 3 years total. LOL I miss traveling.

I Gave Up Painting For Quilting ~ Part 2

While the quilt was getting quilted, I finished making the binding. Now, quilters, mind you, I don't traditionally bind my quilts. Hereis how I made this particular binding.
I started with more of the 5inch squares I had left over from the quilt. I decided on a pattern, and started sewing one long line of squares.
((Pardon the burnt starch on my ironing board. I know. It looks disgusting.))
The long strip of squares has to be ironed into the shape I need it in so it will fit as an easy casing over the edges of the now triple layer quilt.
First, I iron it in half. Then I go back to the beginning and open up the binding and then bring the edges to the inside. Iron firmly.

Fold over and match the edges. Iron. Starch, iron again.

Wrap the binding around the edge of the quilt and start sewing!! I am not a pin user.... But most people will pin the binding down before sewing. I find that step time consuming and the pins always get in the way. My machine likes to eat them.

I put *after market* loops on the back in case Allison wanted to hang the quilt in the baby's nursery. These have their own stitching, so they may be removed so the quilt may be used.

My friend wanted a little dedication on the back.
She came up with, "Wrapped in Grammy's Arms".
I embroidered that phrase on one of the sleeves from the shirt.
Fitting, eh? Even though, once complete, you would never know. I do, my friend does and I am sure Allison's little man will grow up knowing it as well.

Welp, there it is.
I also made a smaller, crib sized quilt, but I tied it.

I Gave Up Painting For Quilting ~ Part 1

I have been sitting on this project for a while... Keeping quiet for a couple of months while I work on it in secret.
Now, that the quilt(s) are complete, I can share the story. Also, in the nine years I have been sewing, I have never documented a project from beginning to end. I tried to this time.... I got most of it. I did not get any pictures while the quilt was actually getting quilted at Quilt-N-Sew. Bad timing.
The story behind this Memory Quilt:
A good friend of mine has 2 daughters, Allison and Annie. Both girls and the Mom are attorneys. Allison married Shelby about 15 years ago. Shortly after that, Shelby's Mom passed away after a river rafting trip of an unknown disease. It was VERY unexpected and still undiagnosed. The day of her Memorial Service, Shelby's Dad dropped all of her clothing off at a second hand store.
Well.... My friend wanted a piece of her clothing to save... So one of HER friends spent a couple days going through all the stores merchandise until she finally came up with a baby blue shirt of Shelby's Mom!!!
This shirt was cleaned, pressed and then stored out of sight, out of mind for NINE years in the back of the bottom drawer....
Here is the shirt before I started cutting. I really liked the pin tucks down the front, kinda like a tuxedo shirt. When added to the quilt, it gives dimension and interest. You all know how I enjoy interest, texture and dimension in my work. LOL

So now I kinda wanna share HOW I make quilts. Just keep in mind that I am self taught and I take or make shortcuts. I just wing it, I guess. If any of you reading this are REAL quilters, please do not discipline me. I do the best I can. :0)

All the supplies and tools I would be working with. Including a published book of short stories and poems pulled together after being discovered on Grammy's computer.

First, I had to carefully cut the main attraction of this quilt into perfect 5" X 5" squares. The buttons had to go, as well as the buttonholes.

I use my straight edge and rotary cutter to get them perfect.

After cutting a 5 inch strip of fabric, I then line that strip up and take off the selvage and cut at 5 inch intervals to make 5 inch squares. Just basic.

I love my cutting mat, straight edge and rotary. I used to cut by hand and none of my squares would match. LOL Not only that, but it was very time consuming.

Once all my squares are cut and stacked, I can start making a pattern. I like to choose which fabrics compliment each other as well as those that conflict, or add depth. Making sure the balance of the finished product is right is almost as time consuming as making it.
Here is the grid system I use when doing my layout. It allows me to see which fabrics will touch and it looks like a mini version of the finished product.

Once satisfied with the layout, I stack each row and then stack them. One little neat stack of 5 inch squares!!

Starting with the first row, I sew one strip of squares together, always with right sides together. Sometimes I used my serger, but this time I wanted to be sure my seams were all exactly 1/4 inch, and durable. I don't always trust my serger for strength like I do my New Home digital machine. Everyone has their preferences.

I line up my finished strips, or rows, as I call them. When all of the rows are complete, they will be stacked in opposite order with the bottom row on the top.
Don't forget to iron all seams flat, or the quilt will end up with puffy squares instead of flat ones.

I lay the next row to be attached face down over the bottom row, lining up the center square, and stitch together using a 1/4 inch seam.

Once all rows are together, I iron from the back to make the seams flat, then I trim away all the loose threads and strings to make the back pretty. :0)

Since you can never be perfect, the edges of the quilt need to be evened. Fold the top in half and trim the edges to match.

To finish the top, I used a light weight denim that I bleached a light blue to match the shirt. I cut 4 - 3inch strips and attached them to the perimeter of the patchwork to frame up, or contain the inside design. I always feel that a quilt looks like it would just go on and on if it were not contained with that little piece of framing. So, you will find that all my quilts are framed in just a little bit, so they look finished.

Done for the day!!!
I gathered up my quilt top, my batting and the backing to get over to the quilt shop. They will layer all three parts and use a large machine to sew all three together, making this quilt an indestructible piece. It will last forever, through wash after wash and can be handed down through many generations in its new family.

I may never finish this project, LOL But I figured I could share where it is now.
The kids room.
Not a huge room, so organization and *housekeeping* is a must.
First the theme. Surfing. The beach. California. All things warm and sandy. The kids and I all share the same kinship with salt water and sunburns, so the choice of theme was unanimous.

I started with the walls. Palm trees, shades of blue... I had one obstacle.. a wall with tons of "graffiti" type paint done with enamel paint pens. I had to cover with a dark gloss (kids wanted black, I chose a nice dark chocolate). This wall is free to them to decorate with posters, signs, junk, art. The TV is on this wall too, on a dresser I just recently moved in. It still needs a paint job, along with the other dresser.

My next venture was the closet. I gutted it and painted it a light lime green. Added white wire shelving and some bins on rollers. Everyone has their own space and places to keep their favorite things. The curtains to cover the closet are from a flat sheet I got at Ross. I like that they are white so they add a lightness to the room. And the surfboards, of course, compliment the decor.

I used another for the 2/3 curtain on the window and topped that off with a grass hula skirt. (Garden Ridge Pottery was having a 50% off sale on all party stuff!! So I got a bunch of cool little things like the skirt for pennies!!)

The rest of the surfboard sheet was cut up and I used it in the two queen sized quilts I made the girls and the matching pillow shams. I am happy that the sheets I paid like $25 for, have gone so far in this decor. If I had actually fond a fabric I liked, I wold probably spent $200-300 on it to get enough, and there wold have been lots of seams.

So, anyhow, the paint on the furniture is fun and colorful. Each part is painted a different color, kind of like inside Babin's. (Babin's has a bunch of wood inside that was salvaged from New Orleans, and it is painted fun bright colors and adds personality.) I still have to finish the two dressers, like I said before, and I still have parts of the kids beds to touch up.
I forgot to mention, I ripped up the carpet and painted the concrete a fabulous cerelian blue to mimic water from the prettiest beaches.

Update on me: After a bout of walking pneumonia and yet another round of antibiotics, I am FINALLY beginning to feel more like Trevor again. (Yea!)
Since closing the Pink Zebra, I have not been creating. I have been avoiding the sewing machines staring at me from my dining room table. Except for the curtains and quilts I made for the girls bedroom, I have made nothing. The CPSIA crap just totally did me in. It killed my spirit and my *want* to make anything for the little ones. And I hate it (actually, I hate the thoughtless authors of the darned law!)
I have been given a quest!! I have a secret project to make for a friend.... She saved some things and I have been given the job to create something new from something blue... I can hardly wait to share, but I have to keep the secret for a bit longer.
As so many of my friends on Facebook reminded me last week, I have celebrated yet another birthday. Woot!! Thanks for all the shout outs from friends past and present. I had a fabulous lunch at SaltGrass with my dear friend, Marsha. MMmmmmm... with a slice of cheesecake for desert. Yummy!!
Other than that, my friends, work, clean the house, hang with the dog. I have just been laying low. Hangin' tight and working at Babin's pretty much every night.
I do try to be home on Modays for Dancing with the stars and Thursdays for SurvivorNight.
Here is a shout out to all my old PZB customers: I jst dropped off all my left over stock at the very same address and old house on First Street, but theres a new owner in town: Kathryn of the Childrens Carrosel. She sells some consignment clothing (new and used) hnadmade cloth diapers and tons of toys. Shes even got strollers, highchairs, carseats. You name it. She is so packed in there she will be moving to a much larger location in a month. I will keep you notified as she will have a special KraftyMommas section jst for them new babies!! Ye-ah!!
Yes, KMB will be making a new baby line that is completely CPSIA compliant.

TOUCHDOWN!!

Most of you who KNOW me, know I have had "IBS" for the past 20 years or so. Good days, bad days.... I have tried meds, diet, less stress.... Everything to try and correct what has been *diagnosed* as IBS.
However, at my last Doctors appointment, for my heart, she prescribed a really strong antibiotic. And with that antibiotic, she recommended I drink one or two DanActives a day to keep the good flora in my digestive system. (The antibiotic kills ALL the bacteria, good and bad and in the digestive system. In fact, according to WebMD.com, you can get a form of Colitis up to 3 months AFTER taking the antibiotic!! WOW!!) So, since I am scared to death of having/getting anything to upset my digestion, I scrambled to the store and started taking 1-2 DanActives every day while I was taking the antibiotics.
Lemme tell you.... I have had the HAPPIEST digestive system I have had since I can even rememeber. I am *on time* and not only that, I can complete an entire cycle (ifyouknowwhatImean). No more stock-piling for a week or more and then eliminating a million times in one day, making my stomach ache and feeling nauseated and unable to eat. No more bouts of diarreah. I feel great!!
More benefits, as they advertise: DanActive helps to increase your immune stystem so you won't pick up bugs all the time. We'll see if that holds true.....
One last benefit: I have lost FIVE pounds since I started drinking the DanActive. I do not know if it was the "build up" or the fact that my body is digesting what I need or even that I am not craving crap food much anymore. I don't care, I am just not bloated anymore and that makes me *feel* in better shape.
So, I urge you, go try some!! Just for a week or two. You tell me what you think!! Leave me a comment if you believe!!

Glaveston, TX is rebuilding!! Yea!!

I have no idea why I love Galveston, TX so much. Really. It is so NOT a California beach town... no real waves, the water is dirty, debris on the shore and lots of jellyfish in the surf.
All that aside, it smells so salty, the wind blows spray in my face... Ahhhh. The sun burning my skin while the kids kick up sand into my contacts... Peace. Love. Serenity.
After spending the last two years of Saturdays at the shop and not having been in Galveston since my Dad was here in March of 2007, I have been feeling the pull, the lure of sand and salt water tugging... no wait, PULLING & DRAGGING me towards the Gulf of Mexico. After my health scare, I KNEW I needed to something for ME that I enjoy, that I need, and I needed to take the girls down to Galveston to check it out and get some sun.
So yesterday, we piled into the Isuzu and made tracks to the beach.
Perfection. Could not have asked for a better day.
We saw total destruction, things standing in the middle of destruction. We saw rebuilding, fixing and brand new growth. Many of our favorite things were still in place, like Mr. Shark (AKA Ole Rusty Butt) who sits across from the seawall right on Seawall Blvd. He was a bit beat up, but still standing all mighty with his surf board.
I have to say, I am in love with Galveston's strength and integrity to come back and rebuild. After Ike, there were literally no beaches. The water came up to the seawall. Now, after 5 months of sand dumping, tourists, locals have a beach to take the kids to, run dog on... It is simply amazing to see Galvestonians work so hard... all day, all night to deliver sand to the beaches. And other things too. Like all the houses.... So many abandoned, demolished. Then we drive on another street and there are houses being fixed, painted. I snapped a couple pictures of houses that at first glance are just so cute, but when you look at the picture, you will notice little things: the corner of the roof, a dead palm tree, slats missing from a shutter, or the entire shutter missing from the home..... but only on one widow. Oh so random.
I am so happy to see Galveston rebuilding and jumping back after such devastation. I am proud of them also.
The water came up to over 9 feet into the Strand District. It was not water coming up and over the seawall, but instead, when the storm surge came into the ship channel, it was shoved up the backside of Galveston Island and onto the streets and shops along the Strand. I got a few pictures of where the waterline was. Hard to imagine the Strand submerged, even for just a few hours. I congratulate the shop/restaurant owners for their strength and love for what they do to rebuild, repaint and reopen.

I was able to speak to a few of the Strand's shop owners. This was the first weekend they had seen a lot of people shopping and hanging out (spending money), other than Mardi Gras weekend. I giggled every time I saw the basket or section with the signs that read, "50% off Ike damaged T-shirts", LOL
Anyhow, I will stop my rambling (I had a lot to say, and still do) and let you get on with the pictures. There are many, so go get your cup 'o joe, LOL
Make sure you get to the ones with the FABULOUS Victorian Architecture. The attention to details, the paint, the choice of colors. It is simply amazing if you let yourself believe.

Where Ya Been??

Hey, where has Krafty been?
I have been fighting some health issues. Of all things, my heart. I was having that "beating in my chest" feeling or fluttering. It was all the time, not just once in a while and I was exhasted. So I finally owned up and drug myself to see the doctor. After several tests, including a way cool ultra sound of my heart, I found out that I have high cholesterol, a bacterial infection somewhere in my body and my heart is just fine and healthy. Since I have been on the antibiotics, the fluttering has gone away and I am finally beginning to feel like me. I also took a mini vacation from all my stresses (doctors orders) and did nothing but clean house and paint. My stress relievers.
Thanks, everyone for the emails wondering what is up. I did not get any of them until yesterday because I did not turn on my pc for almost a week. It was actually kinda nice.

Dear Chairmen Waxman and Rush and Ranking Members Barton and Radanovich:

I am writing to regarding the new law, CPSIA, put into effect February 10, 2009.

You see, I have been making and designing children’s Boutique Clothing for eight years now. I have spent many hours using my creativity to design perfect appliques and mastering twirly skirts. I have also built a huge customer base who rely on me to keep their children dressed in the best of custom clothing. It is what I do, and who I am.

In January of 2007, I utilized my talents and that of 10 other children’s designers to open The Pink Zebra Boutique. A small shop where Mom’s could come in and touch, see, feel the best in handmade clothing and accessories for their children. Our offerings quickly became popular here in the small town of Katy, Texas and even Moms from Houston would drive in to shop in my store. The Pink Zebra became an icon in a very short time.
This past December 2008, I became aware of CPSIA, but only because I like to be on my computer. If I did not have this tool, I would not have found out until someone verbally told me about it. I spent many hours, days and weeks researching and trying to figure out why CPSIA was including me! How could I need to test clothing items with nothing but fabrics and thread for lead? Have I been poisoning children for the past 8 years?

I quickly researched the testing that would be needed.... XRF Technology would be good until August of 2009. I inquired at some companies to see if the cost would be feasible. At $400 a day to rent the gun, and the training involved paired with the amount of merchandise in my store would cost me over $2000, and closure of the store for a week or more to make the documentation.

I spent 2 weeks trying to decide what I should do.

I have put so much money and time into painting the shop, the walls, the furniture, the displays. I had just purchased 1,000 new business cards in December. I lost the deposit I put on the building because I had to break the contract 2 months early.

I feel like I have taken a personal blow with everything I have lost.
With no word or changes to the CPSIA, I gave notice to my landlord that I would be closing my shop, vacating the first week of February. Everything immediatly went on sale to clear out as much as possible. Many of our items sold at or below materials cost, giving us all a loss on our business efforts.

The Pink Zebra Boutique closed on January 31, 2009.

It is so sad, that my dream of being an enterprenuer and Business icon in my community was so quickly snuffed by an over reaching law that was intended to make TOYS safer for children. It makes me so angry that everything I have worked for the past decade is gone. It saddens me that my customers, my biggest cheerleaders, can no longer purchase the very clothing items I love to design.

Although it is too late to save the Pink Zebra and all the designers associated with it, maybe something can be done to save the rest of the handmade clothing business.

Component testing. If all components available to BUY were lead free. If the fabric were certified lead free. The elastic, the thread. IF toys and other goods need to be lead free, the components to make such items should also be lead free.

I think about all the new Moms holding their newborns against the tee-shirt that says, “New Mom” all in crystals. I worry that the quilt on my bed from JC Penney, that my babies laid on when I changed their diapers, might have lead. It is not just childrens items, or baby things. My babies were held close to me and MY shirts were never tested for lead.

In closing, I want to thank you for taking the time to read my letter. This law means so much to me and my livelyhood. I want for children to be safe, not coddled, or in a plastic bubble. CPSIA and My Five Favorites

Bankruptcy Day is only TWO days away, and I have been thinking about how my (and my children's) lives will be changed forever. I am making a list of (only) 5 of my FAVORITE things that will be affected on February 10, 2009, forever.

1. Tee-shirts. As a kid I always loved wearing tee's with silly graphics and pictures of my favorite rock bands. My kids are following in my footsteps... Hillary Duff, Taylor Swift, Vans Tennis shoes. Even silly ones like "Can I recycle my brother?". No more silly, trendy tees for my kids.

2. Halloween!!! I would have 5 Halloweens instead of all the other Holidays!! We love to dress up in the craziest of KraftyMommas Boutique costumes, complete with tons of accessories we often buy at the Dollar Store and WalMart. This year, in 2009, we won't be able to do much, as it will cost THOUSANDS of dollars to have these extravagant costumes tested. Not only that, but last years prize winning costumes will not be legal to sell on eBay, due the cost of testing requirements.

3. Resale shop-hopping. The girls and I LOVE checking the resale shops for things to paint and craft with. But we also love to buy clothes and stuff for play and dress up. Sometimes we even find items for our Halloween costumes. Most of the resale shops by our house have stopped taking children's items for fear of getting caught selling/stocking and illegal item. They are scared of what COULD happen, since they do not possess an XRF gun or the money to buy one.

4. Garage Sales. Yep, I am el-cheapo. I love garage sales. When the kids were babies, I bought 3/4 or their wardrobes from garage sales, and we still do frequent them. One can never have too many pairs of shorts here in Texas, nor can a girl have too much Barbie crap. I refuse to buy certain things at retail, when I know it will get lost, forgotten or thrown away, LOL Now, I guess, not-so-much.

5. My creations. (I saved this for last) I love the fact that I can make so many different things for babies. That people seek me out to make that special quilt or coming home from the hospital outfit, is such a blessing. I have been bettering my sewing skills every day for the past 8 years to get to where I am now. Not only have I lost the freedom to create for others, but I have lost my brick and mortar shop as well. Over the course of 2 years, I built up relationships with designers and customers alike, and now I have to bid them adieu. Many will hang on to our friendship, but without the common bond, others will slowly fade and begin buying mass produced crap for Target and Walmart, as they can squeeze that cost of lead testing into their production line.

CPSIA (Confusion) Update

So much confusion.....
The CPSIA has my panties in a wad!! LOL
A new development today: A Press Release from the CPSC, to spell out the Enforcement Policy for new lead limits in Children's products efective February 10, 2009.
Yep. Another, of I am sure, to be many.
In this newest release, the document basically states that there are certain materials used in children's items that have been proven NOT to have in lead in them. This works hand-in-hand with last weeks stay of mandatory testing and certification. The certain materials are as follows:

...certain natural materials, including wood, wool, cotton and metals and alloys known to not contain traces of lead in them
...ordinary children's books printed AFTER 1985
...dyed or undyed textiles (not including leather, vinyl or PVC) and non-metallic thread and trim used in children's clothing and other fabric products, including baby blankets

I can read into that, as a crafter/seamstress/business owner, that the product made by KraftyMommas Boutique (ME!!) can and will be sold LEGALLY for up to one year from now. I have the freedom to continue creating for the babies and for the older crowd, provided I do not accessorize with zippers, buttons, leather, charms or bling. So, YEA!! for me!! And for all the other girls wearing my boots right now!!! My biggest hurdle will be finding overalls with compliant snaps and clips. I applique a lot of overalls still, and need to make sure all the metal hardware is complaint. I have a tote full of blanks I may have to burn.... Ugh.
I feel bad though, for libraries and book stores, though. Stuff printed before 1985 MAY have lead in the ink they printed the books with. That's a tough thing. I have collections of books from my Dad's sister that date from the 40's and 50's. Not to mention all book collections I have, like Nancy Drew, Little House and Wizard of Oz. My kids will read them, lead or no lead, as I did, and I am just fine, thank-you-very-much!!!
Those are the main topics covered by todays announcement. Many of us on Twitter are still wary that this is even the correct way to interpret the Press Release. The CPSIA has been oh so confusing to everyone involved, including the CPSC, since day one. No one seems to *know* the answers completely, so many things have been guesstimated or insinuated. Hence the picture at the top of this post.
Remember, though, this enforcement policy will only stay in effect until superseded by action of the Comission.
IOW: Until they decide to change the interpretation, again.

NOTE: Many people are so confused by what the CPSC thinks is giving clear and concise information on their site. I am beginning to believe they are writing in code purposely, to encourage all of us bloggers and Twitters to super-sleuth out the answers, like Scooby-Doo!!

Keep trying, CPSC, one day you will get it right, I hope!!!

SHEW It has been a busy week!!

I just realized it has been nearly a week since I have sat down with enough time to actually blog!! That is a long time for y'all to keep checking in and I feel like I have let you down.
[My apologies]
So, what has kept me so busy? Closing up the Pink Zebra, working at Babin's and fighting this darn head cold, that's what!
Monday, my friend Heather (the Master Packer!!) and her Hubs came to my rescue and helped me organized enough to get a HUGE load of stuff moved from the shop to my garage. Heather is quite meticulous (she SAYS shes not OCD, but whatever!!) at packing and I am so thankful to have had her help. If not for her, I would probably STILL be there trying to figure it out. LOL David, her Hubs, packed most of the heavy, large furniture into his pick up.
Tuesday, Stacy of SJacobs Designs met me and we jammed her Isuzu and my Isuzu full of most everything else. Her two-year-old, Ashton, kept me moving and grooving. I swear he is the cutest thing alive! I love making that kid giggle!!
Long story short. It took 3 days and the help of 3 AWESOME friends, but the shop was finally empty and ready to vacate on Wednesday 1:00 PM.
My cute little place looks so empty and lonesome without all its displays and cute little Boutique clothing.

CPSC Grants One Year Stay of Testing....

Yes, yes, my friendly bloggy readers. This SOUNDS just exactly what I (and other handmakers) wanted. And it is.... Kinda. It is a small victory of many to come!! But it still needs some adjustments and this gives the CPSC some time to fine tune this awful piece of legislature.
I did do a little jig of accomplishment around my living room. My eyes did well up a bit in sheer happiness that everything us bloggers and Tweets have been fighting for. I DID go celebrate with a basket of fried shrimp and a Cape Cod.
Well, it is worth that small amount of celebration. But the fight is not over and WE still need to keep on, keepin'on with our voices.
A small win. A chance for the CPSC to look over the entire CPSIA document and get it right the second time around. The Stay is for one year.... It states that as a clothing manufacturer, I DO NOT have to test and certify my goods are lead compliant, HOWEVER, I better not get caught selling anything over the 600 parts per million. In fact, a friend of mine, who shall remain nameless, works for a company who produces childrens items. They have already sunk millions into the third party labratory testing to guarantee no lead. (And NO LEAD has ever been found!!) Even with the stay, their Attorney has told them to CONTINUE with the costly testing on each batch, as there will be big box retailers out the fighting the stay, purely because they have already been doing this expensive testing on their products and "so should we". They are probably feeling like they have lost MILLIONS of dollars right now to be February 10th compliant. And I am sure the backlash will be big. I am prepared for things to change, again. I am sure this will be a roller coaster ride all the way to the end. I have my kleenex box close by, next to the bottle of celebratory bottle of wine, just in case. *wink*
So, as a retailer, and manufacturer, um, how do I KNOW my goods are compliant?? I need to test don't I?. Yup, for the most part. I am still held accountable for my wares.

Don't get me wrong!! I am thankful for the smallest hint that our voices are being heard. As Mark Riffey said, "I'd be lying if I didn't tell you that the power of social media is what made this happen." I am so glad to have been a part of that statement.

Yesterday was the last open day of The Pink Zebra. I want to thank everyone who has come in to say good-bye, make purchases and show so much concern about my creative well being. I love you all so much. You have no idea how wonderful it feels to have such a wonderful team behind me supporting me and my dreams.

I also want to thank my dear friend Heather for being a leaning post the past few days. Spending her time with me at the PZB for the past 2 days and being there to celebrate this small win we have with the stay of mandatory testing. She brought her kids to the shop yesterday and a whole bunch of activities to keep all 4 our tikes busy all day. Basically, she entertained the kids while I handled customers (friends!!) without interruption and was able to get things done.
MUAH!!!
I will leave you with the highlight of my day... Miss Morgan Farnsworth. Mommy bought her my FAVORITE OOAK Texas A&M deco overalls. Needless to say, Morgan loved them!! :0)

CPSIA Blog-In Part 2

As parents and concerned citizens I’m sure most of us at one time or another have been confronted with the question of lead poisoning. But have you asked yourself what your government is doing to protect your children from lead contained in toys? The answer? They're banning toys, taking books from schools and libraries, hurting low income families, killing entrepreneurial spirit and risking putting the economy in an even greater depression than we've seen in decades. I'd like to introduce you to their solution: the CPSIA.

Do you know about the CPSIA? No? Then I ask you to take a few minutes to find out about it.

The CPSIA stands for Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, a new set of laws that will come into effect on 10 February, 2009 and will impact many, many people in a negative way. Make no mistake, this is very real. View it for yourself. If Forbes, the American Library Association and numerous other media are paying attention, perhaps you should too.

How will these new laws affect you? Well, here are a few examples:

To the Parents of Young Students:
Due to the new law, expect to see the cost of school supplies sky rocket. While those paper clips weren't originally intended for your student to use, they will need to be tested now that your 11-year-old needs them for his school project. This law applies to any and all school supplies (textbooks, pencils, crayons, paper, etc.) being used by children under 12.

To the Avid Reader:
Due to the new law, all children's books will be pulled from library and school shelves, as there is no exemption for them. That’s okay though, there's always television. Our children don’t need to learn the love of reading after all.

To the Lover of All Things Handmade:
Due to the new law, you will now be given a cotton ball and an instruction manual so you can make it yourself since that blanket you originally had your eye on for $50 will now cost you around $1,000 after it's passed testing. It won't even be the one-of-a-kind blanket you were hoping for. Items are destroyed in the testing process making one-of-a-kind items virtually impossible. So that gorgeous hand-knit hat you bought your child this past winter won’t be available next winter.

To the Environmentalist:
Due to the new law, all items in non-compliance will now be dumped into our already overflowing landfills. Imagine not just products from the small business owners, but the Big Box Stores as well. You can't sell it so you must toss it. Or be potentially sued for selling it. You can't even give them away. If you are caught, it is still a violation.

To the Second-Hand Shopper:
Due to the new law, you will now need to spend $20 for that brand new pair of jeans for your 2-year old, rather than shop at the Goodwill for second hand. Many resale shops are eliminating children's items all together to avoid future lawsuits.

To the Entrepreneur:
Due to this new law, you will be forced to adhere to strict testing of your unique products or discontinue to make and/or sell them. Small businesses will be likely to be unable to afford the cost of testing and be forced to close up shop. Due to the current economic state, you'll have to hope for the best when it comes to finding a new job in Corporate America.

To the Antique Toy Collector:
Due to the new law, you'd better start buying now because it's all going to private collection and will no longer be available to purchase. “Because the new rules apply retroactively, toys and clothes already on the shelf will have to be thrown out if they aren't certified as safe.” http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123189645948879745.html

To the American Economy:
Already struggling under an economy that hasn’t been this weak in decades, the American economy will be hit harder with the inevitable loss of jobs and revenues from suppliers, small businesses and consumers. The required testing is far too costly and restrictive for small businesses or individuals to undertake.

To the Worldwide Economy:
Due to this new law, many foreign manufacturers have already pulled out of the US market. You can imagine the impact of this on their businesses.

Mark Riffey posted a Press Release of which I printed several copies and have been distributing to local area business in Katy to give them awareness and motivate them to DO SOMETHING!!
Last night while waiting tables at Babin's (my alter ego) I had the pleasure of meeting some retail reps for sporting goods. They supply children's bicycles and other equipment to local stores. One newer rep was only RECENTLY notified of CPSIA and she had VERY little knowledge on the subject. I found myself going into my whole educational spiel (sorry about that!!) while they ate dessert (Mmmmmm, bread pudding!) I ended with handing her my card with my blog on back so that she and her fellow employees could get more information. I have tried to be informative here, and provide links to other well known writers on the subject. I am *hoping* she gets a chance to learn more, not only to help us in supporting OUR views, but to help her in her job.
Wow, I have a ton more to write, but I am sooooo late for the shop, I better "GIT". I will post yet another post tonight!! Stay tuned!!

A Bright Light during a Gloomy Time

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Jaden Moore, who is 4, today.
His Mom brought him by the Pink Zebra to do a little bargain shopping.
Jaden was asleep when she brought him in, but he quickly opened his eyes and was ready to look around himself. He woke up in place for kids, he could sense it down to his toes. It took about 30 seconds of convincing him that the little white rocking chair was OK to sit in while Mom shops. After that, we chatted for a bit and I showed him my most favorite rocking horse. :0)
Jaden stood up from the chair, gently placed his beloved blankie in it and hitched his denim leg over the horse.
"This is a racing horse. He goes reaaaallll fast!"
Whadda Cowboy!!
Oh yea, my friend. Jaden brightened up my gloomy day!!! I feel as if I have a permanent scowl on my face these days.
Thanks, Jaden's Mom, for stopping in to see us today. I am glad I had batteries in the camera today to capture your son's happiness and freeness. It was catchy, and I found myself skipping just a little bit for the rest of the day.

PS I want to apologize now for any grumpiness lately. Lots of stress and closing the store is just not that easy for me.

Updates on CPSIA

Seems my blog comes up when someone searches "CPSIA Update" among other CPSIA related searches, so, I gues I oughtta give you what you pay for. LOL

As of today Friday, January 23, 2009 the CPSIA Law is still holding fast. The original law for lead compliance and testing is still on the "go ahead" for the first phase of lead testing compliancy.
On February 10, 2009 (Bankruptcy Day), any item for a child 12 and under, must come complete with a lead compliance certificate. i.e.: If you are a VENDOR (the retailer, person who sells the merchandise) you must require these certs from your MANUFACTURER, your supplier. As of today (holding my breath as things change sometimes) using XRF technology is deemed a "reasonable testing method" for lead.
This rule is for ALL items; clothing, books, crafts, toys, shoes, toothbrushes... You get the picture.
I personally have not experienced any testing on my items. I find it redundant to spend so much money on my small stock at this time. I barely have anything anymore, and do not have time right now to make anything (except for the Boutique FELONY launch, hee-hee).
HOWEVER.... Flip over to CPSIA Cheerleader and read Olivia's experience from her Testing Party last Tuesday. She gets right to the point and tells it like it is.

Now, after peeking in on chats, forums and reading bits and pieces, I see that there are so many people who do not know the definitions of some RETAIL words. So I am going to try and define them for you here:

RETAILER: A business which sells goods to the consumer. Like Walmart or Pink Zebra Boutique. A storefront.

RESELLER: One who buys goods from a manufacturer and sells them to customers unchanged. Not much different than a retailer, but its more like investing than retail.

WHOLESALER: Person or firm that buys large (or small) quantities of product from vendors, warehouses them and then resells to retailers. Like a middle-man.

MANUFACTURER: Entity that makes a good through a process involving raw materials, components, or assemblies. Commonly used interchangebly with producer.

A CRAFTER, someone who makes handmade anything: bows, toys, paintings, clothing. We use raw materials, combine with our hands (wave a magic wand, LOL) and we have manufactured something. We, my friends, are the manufacturers, and we, by that default, are the parties responsible for having our items tested for lead before they are sold to ANYONE retailers included.

The other reason I wanted to define these words was to try and clear up a short (raw) video of Julie Valesse when she was trying to talk herself out the interview she was in. She kept saying "reseller" when she was referring to second hand stores (who sell childrens items). The people who work in Resale shops are NOT "resellers". They are simply retail salespeople who work in a store that sells second hand items. There is nothing different about them than me selling items in my store, excepting the fact that I make mine...
Anyhoo....
I feel like I am writing in circles tonight.
Last week, a letter was written to Nancy Nord, the Chairman of CPSC. They were demanding of her.... time, decisions, ideas.... etc. Which is good, don't get me wrong!! One could only hope she would get the hint that she has been less than expedient regarding anything that has to do with CPSIA. Lets say shes been sloth-like. I personally would not be suprised if she were to just up and quit---step down and let some other bozo take over this mess of a law!! (I WOULD!!) Waxman, the author, asked for some clarifications on CPSIA. Everyone I know has their fingers crossed... But in the real world, having any kind of change will not happen before February 10.
That is why "reasonable" testing HAS to be done.
That brings me to Obama. After his innaguration, he put a stop, or stay, on all things in motion that Bush had not finished or signed. CPSIA was NOT one of them!!! CPSIA is already a law that has been passed. There is NO motion anymore. The only thing they (congress & Henry Waxman) can do is make some amendments. IF they want to. IF they feel like it.
Thats my wrap up of what is happening in my little world. I spend my days on Tweet Deck, following all the #CPSIA chatter, checking my Google Alerts for related blogs and news items and answering emails. Just trying to keep up with any news. I have also been calling Senators, newspapers, Legislators and even my Attorney General. Gonna bug the poop out of everyone until they take notice of this poorly written piece of legislation, and then change it to something we can all work with.

I had the pleasure of attending my very good friends' daughters' baby shower this past Saturday. Kristin and her husband, Noah, are expecting their first child. A girl, named Isabella. Bella for short. It was sooooooo nice to get out of my regular routine of doing for others and allowing some time for me. I ate fried food, chatted with other women, drank a glass of wine. While I was there, taking snapshots of all the baby gifts Kristen received, I realized that CPSIA will affect baby showers after February 10, 2009. All those cute and colorful toys, clothing and bibs.
((See?? No matter what I am doing, CPSIA sneaks in a takes over!! It affects EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE!!))
Especially all the handmade items.
You see, last week, the CPSC made a sort of exemption for handmade. Under current ruling, one must have EVERYTHING tested for lead. Be it by XRF gun scanning, or third party accredited labratory, every item deemed for a child 12 and under must come equipped with a GCC (General Conformity Certificate). However, the CPSC decided that 100% cottons, 100% cotton/wool yarns and untreated wood will not have to be tested. All of these fibers may not be treated in any way, shape or form. No dyes, no paints, no color.
So I am posting before February 10, 2009 pictures and after. All that I will be able to afford to make for children (if I choose not to spend 1,000's of dollars testing) is stuff with no color. Me and a 100's of other handmade clothing crafters.

What do you think? Do you think it will come down to this for us handcrafters?? No more color??

Another One Bites The Dust - Thanks CPSIA

As those of you who know me have noticed, the bouncy, positive, happy-go-lucky Trevor has not been around for a while. She's bee hiding behind denial of any wrong doing and pretending that everything will be "just fine". I made the realization yesterday, that it will not be fine. Not for a small Boutique containing nothing but Handmade goodies for children. These very goodies, sought out by many Moms who want their children to stand out in a crowd, will be banned hazardous substances come February 10, 2009. It makes me cringe.... knowing how hard us Moms work to put out a safe and beautiful product, all made with our two hands. Those very products which are fine today, will be trash on Tuesday the 10th. National Bankruptcy Day.
I was in the mindset to go rent the XRF gun and make time to test every item in the shop.... detail all the findings etc. Pull anything with any lead content. But why? I would only have to continue renting the XRF at $400 a day until August when third party testing and certificates on compliance will be mandatory for each item. And then what? 1,000's of dollars to test items that sell for $15?? Hell no.
So, in compliance, I am closing the doors to the Pink Zebra on Saturday, January 31, 2009.
Until then, if you would like to make some purchases, all items will be available in the shop at a ridiculous discount. There will be no lead certs, so don't ask, LOL
At least I can say I did not go out of business for lack of sales and customers. I have a wonderful following of Moms!! I will have to say I went down because of a new law. I did not bomb as a designer, on the contrary.
And don't me wrong, CPSIA, I plan on fighting you until you give up and roll over to show me your belly. I am on you like stink on poop!!!
I have decided that I will keep on offering creative wearable art for 13 and up. I will start early on the production of Homecoming overalls for the local high schools. Denim jackets, cool jeans. My market will just change. *sigh* I will miss making the cute little baby twirl skirts and baby quilts.
But!!! On the positive side, I will less stressed, I will have more time for my family and I might actually start making money, instead of constantly investing it.
So, thanks CPSIA, for giving me this huge headache, and redirecting my creativity. I guess. I hate you with abandon. You will never truly know how much you have hurt me and so many others. We are good people who love children and never dreampt of doing them harm.

CPSIA Updates and my dreaded Opinion

dIts update time!! Good and not so good.
Yesterday, CPSC issued a clarification letter regarding resale/thrift/ministries Stores. Childrens items may still be donated and sold. HOWEVER the shops will still be heald accountable for any recalled items and clothing/toys/furniture containing lead and phylates. That is great for them!! (BUT how are they gonna DO that??)

Tuesday, the CPSC voted to allow some natural fibers, ((Undyed, un messed with, un painted, un embellished)) like cotton, wool and wood to exempted from testing. That is great for the natural toy makers!! I bet they are wiping the sweat off their bow as I type!!

So, you see, the CPSC is starting to listen to us, the small bodies, combined to make us big. They are beginning to react. Make small tweaks where the law was so much like a blanket, without any shape.
In it's own little way, the CPSC was doing the right thing when they wrote the CPSIA. And I see it now. *enter rays of sunshine raining down from the Heavens* Although, yes, I do believe they hurried and whatnot to get it done and passed. They included way too much and forgot a ton, ifyouknowwhatImean.

Until today, I was thinking, "Me, MY, I" instead of "WE, THEY, US". I was being very selfish with my thoughts pertaining to the CPSIA. All I could conjure up was how it would affect ME & MY business, and MY shop.

I woke up this morning with a realization: The CPSIA will not be changing in favor of the micro/small manufacturers. Namely, ME; US. :0)

But why not?? You ask....

Well, it starts here: If you make something, then you are a manufacturer. I am a manufacturer. Jennifer is a manufacturer. There are a billion manufacturers, tiny and huge. The CPSC does not care an iota what size the manufacturer is, they just want conformity from ALL manufacturers. The same rules, the same regulations, the same testing guidelines. EVERY MANUFACTURER big or tiny in the childrens industry, must comply to the same book of rules and regulations. Its professional. Its safe. It will weed out the ones who can't and leave the ones who can.

Nope. Not gonna happen.
Heres why: I could hop onto Etsy or eBay and in 5 mins find 10 items that are NOT in compliance of TODAYS safety laws. All made by home based businesses. Bling pacifiers, bling shoes, bottons, charms. Everyone seeks them out cuz "they're so cute", no one else has one and
they are hand made. The reason I can find them there and NOT at Walmart or Macy's, is because they are illegal. They pose both a choking hazard and a lead violation. You would think (and I did for so long while in denial...!!) that if you went to Joanns or Hobby Lobby and purchased all your goodies there, that everything would just be safe. Nope. I was so wrong. It took a while for me to realize it, but there are all sorts of neat do-dads available.... for GROWN-UPS!! Charms, beads, crystals, paints..... The list goes on and on. It is all those neat little things that we as childrens designers are adding to our *safe* garments; making them hazardous. In fact, I made some jeans with "Penelope the Pirate" on them.

I hand stitched chain and little fringe-trim coins to them. That chain and coin collection could have been a toxic waste dump for a tiny one (Good thing I only made them for a 8 yr old and a Mom when I listed them). It is US, the tiny hand made manufacturers who are guilty of offering lead and phylate laden childrens items.
Because there has been no one to police US. Until now.
As a childrens manufacturer, I am guilty of having screwed up by using inappropriate items on my applique masterpieces. Oops. :0)
This all brings me to the truth of the whole CPSIA deal.
It is my opinion that CPSIA will make us, as manufacturers, all on the same page, weed out
the ones who cannot comply (myself included) and also weed out the ones in non-compliance (using lead, intentionally or not). It will bring out the professionals (thanks K!!) and bury the rest.
In all my attempts to see this to the end, I fear it has already taken a piece of my heart. I know that my baby things are lead free. I know that if I can stay out of the *fun* stuff and just applique, my kids' stuff will be lead free. But I do not have the capital to have my one of a kind
items tested for lead. I do not have enough time in any day to complete what I NEED to do, much less the things I want, and still be a Mom, wife & partner. I have no time or money to run out and rent XRF to test everything!! The past four weeks I have stressed myself silly and sick over this mess because it does not just affect my lifestyle, but it affects my passion, my heart.
I have to create.
I am honored to have met some of THE COOLEST people on Earth - some are smart, some are talented, and some have just WOWED me with their super powers. I never would have found them, if it were not for fiasco called CPSIA.
Next month, I will be purchasing the book, The Entreprneur's Guide To Sewn Product Manufacturing, by Kathleen Fasanella. I'll have time to read it and enjoy it. I am really looking forward to a good book!!!
After that, I am getting a head start on Homecoming Overalls for the high school girls!! No more "pedal to the metal" for me!!

Celebrate Pink Zebra Month!!

At the Pink Zebra this month, we are celebrating everything pink & zebra (with a little pink cheetah thrown in). I did a little display yesterday and chose some really sweet items. The center of the display is our new in store mascot, Pink Zebra Zoe. She was originally made to display necklaces, earrings and bracelets, but I addes some bows and baby bands to her hairdo. She was donated to us by Serendipity in Katy. Another cute little house filled with handmade gifts and stuff.

After digging up the pink & zebra, it dawned on me that Valentine's Day is right around the corner!! Oh no!!! Take a look at the pathetic attempt to focus on Valentine's Day....

Guess I better get sewin'!!!

CPSIA The Saga Continues

Well, here it is, January3, 2009. A brand new year. Exactly 2 years ago the Pink Zebra Boutique was founded. A deposit was made, paint purchased and the excitement was started!!!
Now, in our new location and sales happening, the CPSIA has cast a weary glow. I am trying, I really am!! I am done being in denial, done trying to read between the lines and done trying to make my shop exempt.
I got away from my PC for 3 seconds the other day and Googled XRF rental places and found one close by house (of all places!!) Houston has everything!!
Here's the dirt. I can rent one for $400/day to test the items in my shop. Everyone's stuff. (I don't even think I have $400 in inventory right this minute!! HA!!) I will have to photograph everything and then take lots of notes. Hopefully, the gun I rent will be pc compatible, meaning I will be able to download all the scanned info directly into my laptop. That will help bunches if I ever do get questioned by anyone important. I wil be able to provide whatever information I have to show that I am at least TRYING to be compliant to this new law.
I am not planning on renting though, for a few more weeks. It seems that Monday, January 5th, is sposed to be a day in which some amendments might be made. I am kinda waiting to hear something. I do have my fingers and toes crossed, just in case.
In other CPSIA news, a very stupid woman, incredibly full of herself, did a report on FOX news yesterday. OMG!!! She was fed misinformation, got the facts wrong and if I am correct, she only HEARD about the law 5 mins before going on air!!! *rolling my eyes*
Sooooooooo.... a few fellow Twitters & I sent her a tweet or two to let her know her facts were wrong. Yea, well, heh-heh. Can you say, "Cat fight"? I am cracking up!! She is so totally caught in the headlights, but insists that she is right.
I would post her video, but I don't wanna make you barf. That would mess up your keyboard.
((Hey, did you notice I am not whining and bitching tonight?? I took a couple of pajama days, and I feel so much better!!))
